石川林四郎編『コンサイス英和／和英辞典』（三省堂、1947／1950）

渡部昇一が『知的生活の準備』で
「日本で一番英語ができた人」と紹介したのが石川林四郎。
名前を記憶していたら神保町古書店Oオンラインショップで
石川が編んだ「三省堂コンサイス辞典」が出てきた。

ウム、この値段なら小遣いで買える。
一見すれば普通の小型辞典にしか見えない。
何が違うんだろう。

英和、昭和二十二年八八八版印刷／發行。定價　金百八拾圓
和英、昭和二十五年二六六版印刷／発行。定価　金350円
初版はそれぞれ昭和四年、十五年。
とてつもないベストセラー／ロングセラー
だったことが分かる。

和英辞典冒頭から石川の序文を引いてみる。
格調高い英文だ。

　　　TO THE ORIGINAL EDITION

　　　Everybody knows that the compilation
　　　of a dictionary is a pick-and-shovel sort of work;
　　　but it is far more than that,
　　　especially when the language in question is
　　　current Japanese, both written and spoken,
　　　which has never yet been brought
　　　under scientific treatment.

　　　Neither coal-mining nor pyramid-building,
　　　strenuous they are,
　　　can describe the sort of work required.
　　　It may be compared to the task of a builder
　　　who has to quarry for himself,
　　　or rather of a gardener
　　　who lays out a complete landscape
　　　in a limited space
　　　with existing plants and moss-grown rocks.

　　　Hidden or conspicuous
　　　among the ever-growing mass of words
　　　- words living in a true sense -
　　　there are may fossilised words and phrases
　　　to be kept just so,
　　　and new growths in need of pruning,
　　　not to speak of weeds and rubbish
　　　that baffle all attempts at conciseness
　　　which is the soul of linguistic husbandry.
